Overview
The anthropology of Africa provides a lens through which students can begin to redefine what the discipline means for Africa. It is designed to challenge the colonial gaze of Africa and Africans as the conceptual ‘other’ and is instead focused on providing students with skills and resources to augment social and cultural development in Africa and its diaspora.
Although anthropology has a reputation for being backwards looking, with a strong focus on traditional societies, this course challenges conventional perspectives and imagines how African futures can materialise positively out of (neo)colonial conquest and slavery. It covers a range of African countries, tackling diverse themes from migration and identity to violence, resistance, music, and art. It provides students with the skills they need to curate their own research reports – in understanding how to conduct research aimed at providing ethnographic insight into and understanding where to target interventions to some of societies’ most complex social and cultural problems. The methods and theories of anthropological research are used to provide insights and suggestions to non-anthropological parties such as governments, companies, NGOs, or others. The course will enable students to form meaningful partnerships with local, national, and transnational organisations working on African- development.

27 weeks online split into three 9 week modules. 8-10hrs per week minimum commitment
Course delivered with a mix of learning approaches that are designed to challenge students to self-reflect and construct solutions to real-life scenarios. Aside from mandatory live lectures each week, students will be expected to participate in online discussions and peer learning. The course combines live case study, group work and discussion where you will be expected to apply learning and guidance from your tutor. Lectures and tutorials will be delivered via our online campus, with various methods from audio-visual materials, practical exercises, group discussions, guided reading, and conventional lecturing. Assessment will be made via a combination of a course assignment, peer engagement quizzes, and tests.

A qualification in African Anthropology provides you with the knowledge and understanding of today’s complex social and cultural landscape whilst recognising how this diversity extends to the diaspora. It is an opportunity for students to challenge cultural assumptions about Africa that are inherent in western anthropological studies of Africa and African’s, amplifying the voices of marginalised communities.
Students will develop the skills through the course to build and maintain meaningful partnerships with international development organisations that are based in the continent and Pan African organisations in the diaspora and in Africa.
