Overview
19th -20th Century Politics in Africa offers a world-class introduction to the continent’s recent political history. It teaches the best theoretical and scientific tools for interpreting today’s political climate and equips learners to effectively debate Africa’s current political issues. During the course students will learn how to draft policy instruments for complex economic, social, and developmental challenges. Students will discover the
roots of these challenges, and learn to expertly interpret the actions of states, institutions, and civil society.
After completing the course students will also be able to recognise and reflect on western theories of government and power while becoming fully immersed in African political philosophy and African political thought. African Politics engages with various resources, including ancient and pre-colonial manuscripts, journals written by African scholars, primary sources on Africa’s prominent civilisations, as well as a plethora of works by notable Pan-African thinkers.

19th -20th Century Politics in Africa is delivered with a mix of learning approaches that are designed to challenge students to self-reflect and construct solutions to real-life scenarios.
The course combines live case study, group work and discussion where you will be expected to apply learning and guidance from your tutor. Lectures and tutorials will be delivered via our online campus, with various methods such as audio-visual materials, practical exercises, group discussions and guided reading.
Assessment will be made via a combination of a course assignment, peer engagement quizzes, and tests.
Aside from mandatory live lectures each week, students will also be expected to participate in online discussions and peer learning.
